Dublin City Government Overview

MAYOR

The Lord Mayor of Dublin (Irish: Ardmhéara Bhaile Átha Cliath) is the symbolic head of the city government of Dublin, the capital of Ireland. The Lord Mayor is elected to office annually by members of Dublin City Council (previously known as Dublin Corporation) from amongst its members. The current Lord Mayor is Fine Gael Councillor Gerry Breen.

There are four local authorities the Dublin Region – Dublin City Council, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin. There is political debate which raises the possibility that each authority may get a directly elected mayor with executive powers over planning policy, waste management, water services and housing. Such mayors may also chair of the new National Transport Authority.

BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS

City Development Board

The Dublin City Development Board (DCDB) is a partnership of key agencies influencing local development in the city. It is an independent board which works under and is supported by the Local Authority. The main aim of the DCDB is to establish a strategy for social, cultural and economic development and to oversee its implementation. This will be a broadly based strategy covering all major services and will be the result of an intensive research and consultation process. Consultation with local communities is a vital form of the process. The Board aims to involve local communities in the process of developing the 'shared vision' for the area.

Dublin City Children's Services Committee

Dublin Children's Services Committee is one of four pilot committees established by the Office of the Minister for Children & Youth Affairs under the City or County Development Boards. The children's services committees are identified in Towards 2016 Partnership agreement, set up to achieve coordinated and integrated children's services within the Local Authority catchment area.
