The trial of a Dublin man charged with the rape of a homeless woman nearly two years ago has collapsed at the Central Criminal Court.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had pleaded not guilty to raping the then 19-year-old woman at a Dublin address on 13 October 2008.

Mr Justice Paul Carney directed the jury to return a verdict of not guilty as the evidence called by the prosecution supported an offence under the 1990 Criminal Law Rape Amendment Act, which deals with oral rape, anal rape and rape by the association of implements.
